Natural Finish: When the Wood Does the Selling
We carve in basswood from Changbai Mountain. It’s pale, tight-grained, and sands to a satin feel without any finish at all. For the right customer, that’s the whole product. No paint needed.
Who buys natural finish? Boutiques with a minimalist or Japandi aesthetic. Interior designers sourcing for hotel lobbies. Customers who specifically say “I want to see the wood grain.” These buyers associate visible grain with authenticity and quality. Slapping bright paint on a carving for this crowd actually devalues it in their eyes.
What we do for natural pieces: sand to 320 grit, apply one coat of clear matte water-based sealant. That’s it. The sealant stops moisture absorption during shipping (especially important for sea freight) without adding shine or color. The bird looks and feels like raw wood, but won’t warp in a humid store.
Hand-Painted: Maximum Shelf Impact
Painted carvings are your attention-getters. In a shop with 200 items competing for eyeballs, a bright cardinal red or a detailed kingfisher blue pulls people in from across the room. This is why museum shops, tourist stores, and garden centers lean heavily toward painted inventory.
Our painters apply 3-4 thin layers of water-based paint per bird. Thin is the key word — you can still feel the carving texture underneath. Thick paint fills in the detail and makes the piece feel like plastic. We’ve seen competitors do that. It saves them time but kills the product.

Wax vs. Polyurethane: The Protective Coat Decision
Whether a piece is painted or natural, it needs some kind of protective top layer. The two traditional options are wax and polyurethane. We’ll be honest about both:
Clear wax soaks into the wood and gives a soft, hand-rubbed feel. It looks beautiful on natural pieces. The downside: it needs reapplication every 6-12 months, and it offers almost zero protection against water rings or scratches. For a decorative bird on a shelf, that’s fine. For something handled frequently (keychains, desk toys), it’s not enough.
Polyurethane creates a hard shell. Very durable, very protective. Also very… plasticky. It builds a visible film on the surface that can obscure fine carving detail. On a painted bird, it adds unwanted gloss. We don’t use it on our standard pieces.
What we actually use: a matte water-based acrylic sealant. Two thin coats. It protects against moisture and light handling without adding gloss, without yellowing, and without building a visible film. Meets EN71 toy safety standards. For 95% of retail applications, it’s the right call.

The painted premium sounds like a lot until you look at retail pricing. A natural-finish robin wholes at $3.20 and retails at $12. The same robin painted wholes at $4.50 and retails at $19-$22. Color-Wash for Coastal and Farmhouse Stores
This is our most-requested custom finish for beach shops. A color-wash is basically thinned paint wiped over the carving so the grain shows through. The result looks sun-bleached and weathered — like the bird has been sitting on a dock for ten years. It fits the coastal aesthetic perfectly without looking mass-produced.
We can match any color for a wash. Popular ones: seafoam green, driftwood grey, sandy white, dusty blue. MOQ is the same as any custom finish: 300 pieces. If you want a distressed whitewash (thicker white paint, sanded back on edges), that works too — especially on owls and eagles where the feather texture catches the paint nicely.
Matching Finish to Your Customer Base

- Tourist / high-traffic location: Go 80% painted, 20% natural. Bright colors convert walk-in traffic. Impulse purchase price range.
- Boutique / design-forward store: Go 70% natural, 30% painted or color-wash. Your customers are browsing for aesthetics, not souvenirs.
- Online (Etsy/Amazon): Painted photographs better. Natural pieces need lifestyle staging to sell online. If your photography budget is limited, painted is the safer bet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does natural basswood yellow over time?
Slightly, yes. All light woods amber a little with age and UV exposure. Our matte sealant slows this down significantly. Indoors away from direct sun, the color change over 3-5 years is minimal — most customers don’t notice. If you want zero color change, a painted or color-wash finish locks the appearance permanently.
Can I get a distressed or whitewashed look?
Yes. Distressed whitewash is popular on our owl and eagle pieces. We apply a white or off-white paint, let it set, then hand-sand the raised areas to expose wood grain underneath. Each piece looks slightly different, which is the point. MOQ 300 pieces, same as any custom finish.
Are your finishes safe for homes with kids?

Which finish holds up best during ocean shipping?
All of them, as long as the master carton is sealed properly. The real risk in sea freight isn’t the finish — it’s humidity inside the container.
